I've been in all sorts of bands and projects, from punky stuff through jazz to quite weird electronic things. Right now I'm melting faces in a rock band and have some other irons in the fire.
I started properly when I was about 14, although there had always been musical instruments about the house when I was younger. My sister told me that if you played bass it was easy to get in a band, so I bought a really cheap and nasty instrument and taught myself on that.. I think it's still around somewhere; I put EMGs on it and gave it away.
While I'm still a basshead at heart, I quickly added guitar, keys, got into programming and digital audio as a songwriting aid.
My favourite piece is a custom made guitar by Nathan Sheppard. Sadly he doesn't make guitars anymore. It's a beautiful one-off instrument and it stopped me from endlessly buying more.
Oh and I love my vintage Korg MS20 synth.. awesome for basslines..
I think the musican that had the biggest single effect on me was hearing Allan Holdsworth's "Metal Fatigue" album - it was so original in its musicality, structures and in particular textures. Suddenly I realised how much was possible in music if you push at boundaries. It didn't hurt that he is an incredible player and amazingly humble human being too.
Daft Punk, Rush, John Coltrane, Return to Forever, deadmau5, moloko, motorhead, king crimson, eno… from there it just gets more random...
